The Power of Cement and the People Who Made It Possible
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Eusebi Güell launched a major industrial project in the heart of the mountains: the Asland cement factory at Clot del Moro, in Castellar de n’Hug.
This location was not chosen by chance.
The mountains provided the limestone needed to produce cement, while the mines of the Catllaràs supplied the coal that fuelled the kilns. The Llobregat River completed this perfect combination, providing the power that drove the turbines.
As part of the major mining project in the Catllaràs, Güell commissioned Antoni Gaudí to design a chalet intended as a residence for the engineers and technicians working in the coal mines.
And to connect everything, innovative infrastructure was built: bridges, roads, cableways and the Tren del Ciment, which transported materials and connected the factory with the surrounding area.
But the true strength behind this story was its people.
The miners who entered the mountain every day.
The factory workers.
And also the women whose often unrecognised work was an essential part of this industrial world, including those who sewed the cement sacks.
Together, they helped shape the identity of this territory.
