In the early 20th century Mr Eusebi Güell i Bacigalupi founded the first Portland cement plant in Catalonia (commonly known as Asland factory) at Clot del Moro site. In order to feed the cement kilns, the plant used the coal coming from the mines located in Catllaràs mountain. The considerable distance between the mines and La Pobla de Lillet village led Mr Güell to order architect Mr Antoni Gaudí the design of Xalet del Catllaràs, a mountain refuge to be used as workers’ and engineers’ housing.

During his stay in Lillet Valley, Mr Gaudí lodged at Artigas family house, who owned one of the most prosperous factories at that time. As a sign of gratitude for their hospitality, Gaudí gave them the design of a garden completely adapted to a terrain in front of the family’s house and the factory.  That was the origin of Jardins Artigas, a work where nature and architecture merge in perfect harmony.

VISIT

The visit starts by explaining the social and economic context of our municipality at the beginning of the 20th century and the relationship between Mr Güell and Artigas family.

After discovering the reason why Gaudí came to La Pobla de Lillet, we begin our tour following an itinerary that shows architectural details as “trencadís” or catenary-arch, common signs of the architect’s work. Fountains, benches, railings and bridges are some of the constructions that can be admired during the tour.

Jardins Artigas are not accessible to persons with reduced mobility.

FAQ’s

How to get there?

By car: from the center of the village, entering Plaça del Fort, continue along Pontarró, Àngel Guimerà and Salvador Torrents streets. At the end of this street you will find the train track, which you must follow until you reach the Jardins Artigas car park.

Warning: on days when the Ciment Train is running, it is mandatory to follow the traffic lights at the end of Salvador Torrents street. If the light is on, you must wait for the train to pass. Then you can access the track and continue to the parking of the gardens. Once you finish your visit, you can ask at the ticket office if it is a good time to access the train track.

By coach: coaches and minibuses cannot access the gardens through the centre of the village, but must drive on the train track from the start. For this reason, we recommend you to contact the Tourist Office, where they will give you the directions to make this drive with maximum safety.

By the Tren del Ciment: you will find all the information at www.trendelciment.cat/en
