8. Original Entrance
We are at the only entrance designed by Antoni Gaudi in the original project of the gardens. The ones we have seen were commissioned by the family and this one was made during the restoration works.
The original entrance is formed by crossed tree trunks and sculptures of snakes crossed with their open mouths on the sides. These serpents protected the entrance and are made of reddish stone from the municipality of Castellar de N’Hug, the reddish colour that gives name to the Llobregat river. The etymology of the word comes from the word in Latin rubricatus, which means red, and describes the colour the water gets when the erosion of storms washes away sediments downstream.
From here we can see the exterior of the gazebo.
This circular structure, of conical dome, represents a hay loft. We must not forget that Gaudí grew up in Riudoms, at the family country house named the Calderera (the boilermaker). He had a lot of time in this place to analyse the shapes nature took in order to replicate them, and to get inspired from farming elements as well.
On the roof it can be seen Gaudí’s well-known technique of “trencadís”, or broken tile mosaics made of slate.
Continuing to our right we will get closer to the overlook to see the Artigas industry and read the explanatory panels about the outstanding men Joan Artigas Casas and Joan Artigas Alart.
We will turn back and continue straight through the canal avenue until the bottom, and we will walk down the stairs.
