11. La Pobla de Lillet
The place name of “Lillet” is mentioned in documents that date back to the 9th century, much earlier than the Municipal Charter. The meaning of this name is summarized in three very different theories.
– Derived of the base form “Lil”, which means darkness, for the abundance of vegetation and nocturnal bird flocks.
– “Vall de Lillet” as a synonym of “Vall de Lliris”, so, Lillies’ valley.
– Derived of “islet”, considering that the town adopts the shape of an island among the rivers of Llobregat, Arija and Regatell.
The coat of arms of the municipality is peculiar, you will see it dominates the façade of the Townhall. It has a fortified village (La Pobla de Lillet) and a mysterious hand that tries to grab it. This unsettling hand depicts the Mataplana family, declaring the invulnerability of their power and representing their municipality as an impenetrable fort.
