21. The Castle of Lillet
The steep rock you have in front of you is where in old times there was the Castle of Lillet, also more recently named Castle of the Village (due to the proximity to the farmhouse of the village).
Before the arrival of the Mataplana to the valley, the Ponç family was owner of these lands; and they lived in the Castle of Lillet (of which today we still have the remains of its walls). Around this castle there were a number of scattered houses, without forming any type of unified settlement.
In 1297, Ramon d’Urtx and his son Hug of Mataplana; owners of these territories then, offered a Municipal Charter to anyone who wanted to settle at El Pujol (the small hill in the confluence of Llobregat, Arija and Regatell rivers). It is the origin of current La Pobla de Lillet, a safe and protected place, where the Mataplana established their place of residence.
The Castle of Lillet would become refuge in times of conflict for the people who lived in this area, outside the walls of la Pobla de Lillet.
