22. The Catllaràs Chalet
At the beginning of the 19th century, coal extracted from the mines of this place supplied the furnaces of the cement Asland Factory of El Clot del Moro, property of Eusebi Güell i Bacigalupi.
The extracting activity was carried out far from the population centre of La Pobla de Lillet, for this reason Güell decided on the construction of a housing for technicians and workers. He requested the design of the project to Antoni Gaudí. In the year 1902 the construction of this chalet began, the Catllaràs chalet.
With the Spanish Civil War and the stop of the extraction of coal, there was deterioration of the site. In the 1970s its function changed, becoming a summer camp house with several changes.
In the past it had a multipurpose exterior stairway, which was the communication component between the three floors and protected some of the key elements to life inside the building. The open façade (still in the shape of catenary) was not made of slate, and the distribution of floors followed “social class” criteria: the cold first floor for the maintenance staff, the insulated second floor for the technical support staff; and the third floor for junior staff.
