25. LA COVA DE LA VERGE (THE CAVE OF THE VIRGIN)
According to legend, a shepherd from Saus grazed the oxen in this shady spot. Suddenly, he noticed one of the animals made curious signals near a shallow cave, where he found the Virgin.
The cave dates back to 1886 and it was built by Don Florenci Piera from Barcelona. It seems that the style with which he decorated the cave was not particularly liked, and in 1888 Don Pere Barnola from La Pobla de Lillet adapted it a little, but still respecting the original work. The image of the Virgin was found among many ferns, a typical plant of the area, and hence the name of virgin of Falgars. The plant also gives name to the sanctuary and it is one of the Found Virgin Maries that, according to the calendar of Saints’ Days, have theirs on 8th of September.
