26. LES SEQUOIES DEL BOSC DE VENTAIOLA (THE SEQUOIA OF THE VENTAIOLA FOREST)
Why are there sequoias, originally from America, in this part of the world? In the first part of the 19th century, two small textile houses disappeared from the town to give way to three small textile industries, located in Ca l’Artigas, Cal Pujol and Cal Costa. They used mills and took advantage of the flow of the Llobregat river to generate electricity. With the discovery of coal of Catllaràs and the subsequent opening of the mines, population in the town grew and these factories soon became a driving force of economic growth in the region. The owners quickly received a huge source of income, acquired new properties and improved their appearance to make them profitable. The owner of Cal Costa, Bonaventura Costa Collell, soon took over the Ventaiola land, which is still part of the family’s estate.
The Ventaiola House, which appeared in a document in 1856, has been managed by tenant farmers called masovers up until today. Bonaventura thought it proper to plant a forest of pine trees in this location and to build the Oak Fountain (Font del Roure) close to the farmhouse. Around 1906, when Father Ramón, founder of the current schools of the town, was returning from a trip to America, Mr Bonaventura contacted him to get 6 sequoias brought from America. Today they stand at the top of the Ventaiola pine forest.
