27. LA SÍNIA DEL CAMP DEL MATEUET (THE NORIA OF MATEUET FIELD)
A Noria is a hydropowered scoop wheel, a complex intended for water extraction for irrigation use. The construction style seems to correspond to a work of the 19th or early 20th century. The elements that formed a Noria were several: the well, the Noria or waterwheel structure (of which nothing remains) and the pond. An irrigation channelling system was also common to have, of which nothing is left either. The well had a mechanism to raise water to the surface composed basically of two wheels, a horizontal one moved by an animal, and a vertical one that raised the water. The vertical wheel was an iron chain in which there were wooden containers, called “catúfols” (pitchers or buckets), which were filled with water from the well. The buckets poured the water into the canal, which in turn poured it inside the pond, where it was gathered and accumulated. The driving force of the horizontal wheel was a donkey tied to an axis, which rotated the wheel. The wheel itself was attached to a gear assembly and with the movement, it transmitted the force to the vertical wheel, which lifted the water inside the buckets. The system enabled the pitchers to pour water into a gathering canal, which then poured the water into the pond. The type of terrain with little slope must have favoured a canal irrigation system that used gravity. The site is called the field of “Cal Mateuet”, named after the owner , who also operated the Noria and worked on the fields. Mateuet, or Mateu Casanova was the father of Joan Casanova, who became Mayor of La Pobla de Lillet for several terms.
