23. SANT MIQUEL DE LILLET (SAINT MICHAEL OF LILLET)
Close to the Monastery of Santa Maria de Lillet, we can find the rotunda chapel of Saint Michael (Sant Miquel). This Romanesque chapel is one of the few buildings of circular or central layout most well preserved in Catalan lands, and it is also one of the smallest.
Its size is small: 6’5m of outside diameter and 4’7 of inside diameter, with a semicircular apse looking to the east.
The building does not have any windows and it is covered with a semi-spherical dome of square stone blocks named ashlar. The wall of the rotunda is crowned with fine small ashlars alternated with empty spaces. The entire surrounding area has a frieze of vertical stones, and the portal is crowned with a semicircular voussoired arch.
Apparently, by an inscription above the altar, we know that the church was consecrated on 9th May 1000. The first written record dates back to 1166, where the chapel is mentioned as a secondary church of the Monastery.
Its excellent state of conservation is due to two restorations: the first one in 1935 by the association Amics de l’Art Vell, which was founded in Barcelona and which helps with the conservation and restoration of the artistic heritage of Catalonia. The second restoration of the chapel was in 1980, by the Diputació de Barcelona.
