10. The Bridge of Arches
This bridge over the Llobregat river is made of a combination of seventeen arches arranged by six, in two parallel lines joined to the impost through the five remaining arches.
The arches have inside a metal framework, which coated in pumice stone, gives them their peculiar aspect. All the stones have holes and joined with wire to the bridge as if it was a great work of costume jewellery.
Inviting us to cross the bridge we find the caryatids, or figures of man and woman. Contrary to what it may seem, it is not a representation of the Artigas couple, but of the people who worked as domestic service of the family. After their stay, Gaudí decided to pay them a small homage, as a gesture of gratitude for services rendered.
The original faces were smooth. The characteristics of man and woman were given during the process of restoration, taking the attire into account: the man, on the left, wears trousers while the other figure on the right, wears a dress or skirt, implying a feminine figure.
Crossing the bridge, we will reach the stairway we have walked down at the beginning, where the tour finishes.
We hope you have enjoyed this tour around one of the least known works of Antoni Gaudí: the Artigas Gardens. We invite you to keep discovering La Vall de Lillet through our website: www.turismelillet.cat
Thank you very much for your visit.
