We are at the Falgars Sanctuary, located on the ridge of the mountain of the same name, at 1288 meters high.
The first record there is of the site of Falgars is from the year 985, in an act of consecration of the church of St Cristòfol de Vallfogona, where it appears as one of the boundaries of it.
Despite the Romanesque origin, the current sanctuary is a work from the 17th century, when profound transformations were made. It consists of the church and the lodging, which form a large, elongated set, with a gable roof (except the western end of the hotel, the most modern one, which has a hip roof). The complex has undergone several restorations and extensions over the years.
Inside, we find the Mare de Deu de Falgars, a Mother of God or Theotokos of Falgars. It is an interesting Gothic carving from the 15th century made of multi-coloured alabaster. The carving is a Virgin who is crowned and standing, with the child in her arms, breastfeeding him. Tradition says that a shepherd from Saus found the image among ferns. Hence the name of the sanctuary: “place of many ferns”.

The Santuary has always been a place of pilgrimage, the most important dates being as follows:
– Sant Marc (Saint Mark’s Day) – the Sunday closest to April 25th.
– Dilluns de Cinquagesma (the Monday after Whit Sunday) – A festive day in which, in the afternoon, in front of the esplanade of the sanctuary, the traditional “Dance of Falgars” is danced.
– Festa Major, the local festival – the Sunday closest to 8th September, the day dedicated to the Found Virgin Maries (Mare de Déus trobades). Catalan and Valencian culture during the 15th and 16h centuries popularized these legends of Found Virgin Maries, who had hidden before the Muslim invasion and were later reunited in the midst of prodigies by shepherds or hermits. On 8th September, all these Found Virgin Maries are commemorated.
